PATRICK BRENNAN (born 1954)
ALTO SAXOPHONE

Detroit-born Brennan won Cadence and Coda accolades with his very first recording, back in I982, but hasn'deep dish records new yorkt broken through to the big time. Roscoe Mitchell and Ornette Coleman are the only obvious influences on saxophone..

Patrick BrennanOne’s first reaction on hearing this disc might be to check the recording date. Trio sessions of this type have been around for some time and probably reached their zenith with Ornette’s Gyllencirkelt recordings for Blue Note. Brennan is very much in that mould and in Ausar-Sahu and Cardoso he has playing partners who are well versed in their Izenzons and Moffetts. The tracks are mostly brief, pungent and slightly inconsequentiaL There isn’t a piece here that really grabs the attention, and yet cumulatively this is a rather effective record that asks to be heard again.
